Collaboration and Leadership Reflection

The effectiveness of leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration is required to accomplish the objectives of patient safety and quality care (Shaha & Grace, 2022). The increment in the number of patients in the Mercy Medical Center medical-surgical unit has resulted in injuries and unnecessary prolonged hospitalization. This issue should be resolved with the collaboration of nurses, physicians, and therapists to deliver good outcomes. The reflection suggests experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, performance assessment of leadership, and outlines the best practice strategies that can enhance patient safety.

Reflection on an Interdisciplinary Collaboration Experience

In the case of the Mercy medical surgical unit at the Mercy Medical Center, an interdisciplinary team was constituted to develop a prevention protocol when patient falls were increasing. Interdisciplinary collaboration among the nurses, physicians, physical therapists, and administrators allows developing a comprehensive and effective plan (Zhou et al., 2021). The interactions between nurses and physical therapists enhanced the mobility programs, whereas the bedside safety rounds enhanced the patient monitoring. The fall incidents were also low with the use of the bed alarms. Quite the contrary, there was no involvement of physicians and lapses in the prevention work because the shifts were not communicated. The team should have addressed the problem of interdisciplinary collaboration and better enforcement of leadership to enhance communication and ensure all team members were involved.

Comparison of Effective vs. Ineffective Leadership

Transformational leadership was applied by leaders of Mercy Medical Center to encourage the staff, foster teamwork, and introduce nurse managers to fall prevention strategies. Good leadership is participative, open to communication, and employee-involving, and poor leadership causes opposition and reduced improvements (De Brun & McAuliffe, 2022). They even put effort into making sure that communication, education, and the empowerment of staff were promoted. Conversely, not all department leaders were on board with the change, and there was non-adherence to protocol, resulting in confusion and slowing down the fall reduction efforts.

Best-Practice Leadership Strategies

Transformational leadership, as well as the Change Management Model by Kotter, can be applied in enhancing interdisciplinary cooperation and patient safety at Mercy Medical Center. Transformational leadership assists in building a culture of safety, teamwork, and innovativeness by empowering and inspiring employees, as well as promoting higher levels of engagement (Barr and Nathenson, 2021). The model developed by Kotter incorporates the aspects of creating urgency, forming a guiding coalition, and establishing a system of sustaining change (Kang et al., 2020). These measures combine effectively into a team activity, provide the level of compliance with the fall prevention measures, and enhance patient outcomes.

Best-Practice Interdisciplinary Collaboration Strategies

Standardized shift handoffs and interdisciplinary huddles can be considered the key strategies to enhance collaboration and patient safety at Mercy Medical Center. This is due to the structured and standardized communication with the handoffs serving to minimize errors and ensure continuity of care throughout the consultation period (Burns et al., 2021). Closer collaboration will be in terms of mutual accountability and unity in patient care across all disciplines due to shared decision-making and frequent team training (Ruebling et al., 2023). The practices will enhance teamwork, remove misunderstandings, and enhance patient outcomes.

Leadership Development Plan

The leaders of Mercy Medical Center provided transformational leadership in order to inspire employees as well as to enhance the process of fall prevention. I would recommend, however, that the concept of servant leadership would assist staff in further development, which would, in turn, assist in building teamwork. Servant leadership pays attention to the needs of teams, the importance of teamwork, and employee empowerment in patient safety (Demeke et al., 2024). To further develop this skill, I will also attend leadership workshops on team dynamics and get mentorship from nurse leaders who have the experience to achieve this skill. These will enhance the interdisciplinary teamwork, better communication, and provide a safer care environment.

Conclusion

To enhance the safety of the patients, Mercy Medical Center needs leadership and robust interdisciplinary teamwork. Structured communication strategies, transformational and servant leadership enhances patient falls. A collaborative culture and proactive leadership can help healthcare teams to achieve improved patient outcomes. Continuous leadership development has significance in patient care and employee enhancement. Shared decision-making should also be encouraged in the organization, and it can be used to establish a strong and united interdisciplinary team.
